Hello all you Orphans, we have launched a new video for the song ‘Sapari‘ this evening on AOL’s Noisecreep.
The video was made by Shahar Hemo and Matan Cohen, who I found after a desperate cry for help on Facebook. They contacted me and from the very first moment we met and started to talk about ideas for the video. I felt confident we found the right guys. They went all out and were totally devoted to make it a very special video. To give an example: they built the whole set for the scene with the actor from scratch! Then they found this amazing place that reminded us of the cover of our ‘Sahara’ album to shoot the scenes with the band. The outcome exceeds anything I could have imagined, as they really managed to express the spiritual aspect of the song.
With the video clip, we are trying to reflect this inner search of a man and his spirit. The actor, Matti Atlas, was filmed in a room, sitting in a box, writing sacred stuff. This is the exact way they used to sit and write in the old days in Yemen. He is writing… searching. At some point, he starts to freak out; to write on the walls, on his body, getting even possessed in a way. He is alone, confused, searching for answers and meaning, just as we all are.
‘Sapari‘, which means ‘tell me’ in Hebrew, is a 17th-century poem written by Sa’adia ben Amram, a jewish poet who lived in Yemen. The song is a duet between the poet and his soul. The poet seeks for his soul and asks her where ‘she’ is. The soul, described as a dove in the song, answers that she is at the high chamber, heavens, preparing herself to wear the shape of a human body. In a way, this song reflects the inner search that every human is going through. We are getting to know our self more and more each and every day, and our journey here is far from being easy.
